They are similar in the sense that both affect the amplitude of the signal.
But they’re different because a compressor is reacting to the overall amplitude of the signal, where as AmpComp (and AmpCompA) react to the frequency given.

AmpComp seems to sound good on a Playbuf instrument signal but I’m wondering how much I’m giving up by not trying to control the individual sample amplitudes and instead applying an effect.
I tend to find that if you play a sample or waveform across a whole midi keyboard, the top end can appear louder than the bass notes - I think this is to do with how we hear. Using AmpComp (or even better AmpCompA) seems to make it seem more balanced between top and bottom. These days I use it on all my synth sounds.
Thanks. I haven’t quite gotten the curve, or freq to where a sample playback rate nearer 0 is well balanced.
I suppose trying to compute the sample amplitudes in a stream doesn’t work. I’m limited there.
