I feel like I’m a bit of a noob, and don’t want to muddy up this place with basic questions, is there a forum online that is active that I can ask silly questions on?
Discord SuperCollider channel: SuperCollider
Facebook SuperCollider group: Redirecting...
is there a forum online that is active that I can ask silly questions on?
You can also ask anything here. I have asked a lot of stupid questions here and have learned a lot from other users.
I’m not on Facebook, but the discord is definitely more chatty and informal than this forum. Silly questions and noob questions are very welcome there.
I’m not saying those questions are unwelcome here, but there seems to be less tolerance for off-topic / conversational posts here, and much of the discussion is geared towards devs and power users. Don’t get me wrong, this place is great, just different vibe.
I’ll check these places out thank you so much
We also have a chat in the forum if you don’t want to use discord, just click on the bubble on the top right or go to https://scsynth.org/chat/c/lobby - you can also see all available channels at https://scsynth.org/chat/browse/all - currently it is not too much activity over there, but it would be great to give this place some traction.
Additionally, I think people should ask all kinds of questions around here, if it is currently not a place for “beginner questions” then you are invited to make it one
Is this true, though? There are plenty of beginner questions and IMO people are generally very helpful.
I think it’s not about beginner vs. advanced users. Chat apps and forums are just different media and as such serve different purposes.
People are aways helpful. It just has a serious tone here. Feel like Im bothering people tbh. Im not a professional coder or a scientist , or a professor. So maybe I just don’t belong
I’m not a professional coder either.
hjh
I’m none of these things
Compared to discord, yes. But of course beginner questions are welcome here, and I certainly did not mean to discourage @sslew from asking them. I think @dscheiba said it best, so I will second that.
I’m not any of those. In the “Questions” category, people take it seriously that they should reply to help in an inclusive way, independent of the background. At least, I know the moderators think this is important.
So, don’t worry about it—as long as it is respectful and in the right category. Discord is probably more informal and unmoderated; you can try both.
One value in asking beginner questions here is that it’s I think the most “official” help venue and it’s searchable, so your question might also help someone else in the future. I find answers to my own problems all the time by searching here.
(I’m also not any of those things)
This is really an underrated feature of classic forums! It also helps that forums are typically self-hosted and therefore not at the mercy of some megacorp.
Well , I’m glad to see that I can ask silly questions, Im starting to think keeping things simple is the best thing with sc. Once you get into gui’s it gets so much more involved. But working with sc in the sc way is the way think I should go as opposed to shoe-horning the way I use a tr606 into sc , use the power of the patterns and sc to do their own unique thing.
I think this is a good idea for learning the instrument – it’s probably more interesting to try to play a flute sonata on the violin if you already play the violin.
Oy. Yes. Also potentially powerful.
