When was SC 2 released?

For an upcoming presentation, I went looking for this datum, but it seems to have disappeared from the web. Wikipedia mentions only version 1 in 1996, and the fact that SC Server went open source in 2002. SC 2 is in between those dates but I cannot find any source that will tell me the year.

Does anyone remember? More or less?

i remember buying a sc2-licence from jmc. that must have been 1998 or 1999.

I remember I ordered an SC1 floppy and James offered that he can also send me the key for downloading the new SC2 version. That was 1998.
